This is a prequel book to the brilliant Last Wild Trilogy by Piers Torday, which is one of my favourite adventure/nature series in kids fiction! In this novel we meet Little Hare, who experiences a vision foretelling the end of the world with rising seas, plagues and fire. He sets out to save not only his little patch of the world, but the whole wide world too.
I adored Little Hare so much. He is a cheeky and brave creature, who struggles with the great responsibility which has been placed upon him, but eventually rises beautifully to the challenge. His banter with his sister is really funny to read and really entertained me the whole way through!
This felt like a really nostalgic read to me, with the added bonus of the close focus on real world issues of global warming and pandemics. I always enjoy children’s books with a focus on global warming, and this book handles a serious topic with sensitivity, while still highlighting its importance to young people.
I love Torday’s writing style, it is accessible yet imaginary. He creates such beautiful images with his writing, and I am always swept away into his novels!
Overall I really enjoyed The Wild Before a lot. It is a beautifully written novel with an important message at the heart of it. This is a perfect book for children of all ages (and adults!) and Little Hare is a brilliant main character who I truly fell in love with!
