My Most Disappointing Reads of 2021

Hello everyone, welcome to my most disappointing reads of 2021 post! This is in no way a reflection of the actual quality of these books, its simply that I personally was disappointed in them! I do have a bad habit of going into books with very very high expectations, which does inevitably lead to some disappointment! Anyway, like I say these aren’t bad books, just my most disappointing reads of 2021.

Runaway

In complete disregard to the intro to this post, I do actually have one book which I do think is actually bad! Runaway by R.L. Stine is a reissue of the Fear Street series which he wrote originally in the 90s, and which have been made into a Netflix show this year. I love a YA horror story, especially one set in the 90s, and I never read these when they were first released (I’m a bit too young). Sadly these are very dated now, there are pretty gross stereotypes and nothing really made sense either. I do own a few other books in this series, and I may give them a try, but I’m not overly hopeful!

Skyward Inn

Jumping into the books that I was disappointed by, we start with Skyward Inn. This is a sci-fi novel set in an Inn where visitors from different planets and species come together to tell stories at a place of safety. This sounded like a beautiful book, instead I just couldn’t figure it out at all. The plot seemed to jump around so much, and new elements and storylines were introduced and then not concluded, leaving everything a bit unsatisfying. I’m sure this is a reflection on me, but it just didn’t work for me at all.

The Fifth Season

This book falls neatly into the category of ‘it just didn’t work for me’. I was so excited to read this book, I had heard so many good things and a lot of people with similar taste to me absolutely loved it so I was confident going in! Instead I found myself having to force my way through this book, until about the last 80 pages or so when it picked up. I own the second book in the trilogy and I will be reading it, but I expected to love this book more, instead I really struggled to finish it!

The Gilded Ones

The Gilded Ones was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021, and I definitely went in with slightly too high expectations! After reading the blurb and thought I was going to get a story about a magical army of powerful women fighting for the Emperor. I kind of got this, but just not in the way I expected or really wanted! I also couldn’t really connect to the characters much, and was overall disappointed.

Happy reading!
