I have never read any of Wexler’s previous work, so I went into this one pretty blind. I have heard a lot of good things about his writing, and I shall definitely be checking out his middle grade series!
This novel is non-stop. From page 1 the story starts and it doesn’t let up its break-neck speed until the final page. Be warned that this is a page-turner, and it is very difficult to put it down once you’ve picked it up.
Wexler is not afraid to risk his characters’ lives, there is quite a lot of death in this book, and Wexler isn’t afraid to kill people off! This definitely added to the non-stop nature of the novel, I couldn’t put it down until I found out what was happening to everyone!
This is a fantasy novel of epic scale, the world is expansive and very well defined by the author, its very creative and I always enjoy getting lost in a new fantasy world.
The only aspect of this novel I was a bit disappointed by were the characters themselves. I just didn’t find myself getting that attached to any of them, despite how hard I tried. I wanted to love Maya and Gyre, but I just felt a bit meh about them all. However, the books was so fast-paced and well crafted that I enjoyed the novel a lot despite this.
Overall I enjoyed this fantasy novel, it had LGBTQIA+ representation with a female/female romance, and a well-crafted world.
