Mars. The red planet. A new frontier for humanity, a civilization where humans can live in peace, lord and master of all they survey.

But this isn’t Space City from those old science-fiction books. We live in Hell City, built into and from a huge subcontinent-sized crater. There’s a big silk canopy over it, feeding out atmosphere as we generate it, little by little, until we can breathe the air.

It’s a perfect place to live, if you actually want to live on Mars. I guess at some point I had actually wanted to live on Mars, because here I am. The money was supposed to be good, and how else was a working Joe like me supposed to get off-planet exactly? But I remember the videos they showed us – guys, not even in suits, watching robots and bees and Bioforms doing all the work – and they didn’t quite get it right… -StoryGraph

My thanks to Lauren at Head of Zeus for inviting me to be part of the Bear Head blog tour!

A follow up to the excellent Dogs of War, this one is packed full of the same amount of action and tension, and despite not having the wonderful Rex in it, it is still a very enjoyable read! I think you could read Bear Head without having read the previous book, but it certainly heightened my enjoyment of the novel, and it was excellent to rejoin some familiar faces!

The wonderful thing about Tchaikovsky’s writing is the moral and philosophical elements that always give me so much to think about. His passages about authority and the ethics of modifying humans and animals was so fascinating, and really gets the reader thinking!

This novel changes location from the previous book, whereas Dogs of War is set on Earth, this one is split between Earth and Mars. I loved this setting, anything space is great, and Tchaikovsky does a great job of setting the scene and making sure the science is straight too.

The characters are just as incredible as the first book. Honey and Jimmy on Mars, and Thomson and Claire on Earth, and the book flips between the two settings and the two sets of characters, which is a very exciting way to write the book, and also allows the reader to get ahead of the characters at certain points!

Overall I really enjoyed this novel, it perfectly continued the thread that began in Dogs of War, and I would highly recommend this duology!

If you enjoy space novels like The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet or The Bastard Legion, you will love Dogs of War and Bear Head.
