Huge thank you to The Write Reads and Penguin UK for having me on The Exiled Blog Tour, and for sending me reading copies of both this book and The Stranded.
This is the sequel to The Stranded, and the novel begins after some time has passed since the events at the end of the first book. After the action packed end to the The Stranded, this novel does take a little while to really get started. Daniels has to spend some of the novel explaining what has happened since the end of the first, which does make things a little slow going at the beginning.
Daniels utilises the split POV well again in The Exiled. We gain a number of new perspectives which Daniels uses to give us some insight into the Federation, and to fill in gaps in the timeline.
Our characters do get a little more development in this sequel. This is a duology and by the end of this novel I did feel that we had learnt enough about most of the characters that their endings made sense. There were some vague decisions made by some characters, which felt a little plot-driven but overall I was pleased that the author expanded on the characters.
The first book was a page turner, and this one is no different. Once the plot gets going it moves along briskly, which I appreciated. There is plenty drama and action to keep readers’ interest. I would’ve liked more background information on the rest of the US and the world at last, we really don’t find out anything about how people ended up living on the cruise ships! But for a duology the page number is limited so I understand.
Overall I enjoyed this YA dystopian novel. It was a good way to wrap up the duology, and it kept me reading until the last page!
