September Wrap Up
Hello, September has come to an end (how, where did it go!?!?!) so I thought I would chat through what I read in September. It was a good reading month for me, I read 18 books!! This is going to be a long post, so settle down with a cup of coffee and enjoy!
I started the month off with the ebook of The Last Smile in Sunder City by Luke Arnold. This is an urban fantasy novel about a private investigator who is hired to investigate a missing elderly vampire. This is a good debut novel, and would be perfect for fans of Ben Aaronovich and Jim Butcher. Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
I picked up The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa when I spotted it on our Female Translated Fiction display at work, and the blurb really appealed to me. I love dystopian fiction, and this is a fascinating Orwellian novel of a society where items are disappearing, and the memories of these items too. A beautifully written novel, and I definitely going to pick up other novels from this author! Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
The first audiobook I listened to in September was The Alchemyst by Michael Scott. This is a young teen series about Nicholas Flamel and the secret of eternal life. Twins Sophie and Josh find themselves caught up in a world of magic and Gods as they try to help Flamel, and discover they are a part of a legend of their own. I enjoyed this book well enough, it read quite young to me, more a young teen/middle grade series, but I’m not sure I’ll pick up the rest of the series. Rating: 3/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
The next book I read was this cookbook/coffee table book all about the perfect books and recipes to read/make throughout the seasons. The pictures in the book are lovely, and I really enjoyed just browsing through it. A perfect gift for book lovers! Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
I then picked up something completely different!! A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness is a paranormal fantasy about a witch and a vampire and a powerful manuscript which every magical creature wants. I enjoyed this novel, it was some good escapist fantasy, and I’m hoping to pick up the sequel soon! Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
My next audiobook was this spooky gothic tale from Laura Purcell. The Silent Companions is the perfect Autumn read, it is chilling and eerie and I loved it! If you enjoy gothic fiction with a spooky twist, this will be perfect for Halloween! Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix was my next read of the month, which I read an e-ARC copy of. This is a fun action-packed book featuring a magical bookseller society set in an alternative 1980s London. It was a fun read! Rating: 3.5/5 Buy from Waterstones here
Possibly my favourite read of the month was The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune, which I listened to on audiobook from Scribd. Everything about this book was perfect, and my commute to work was so enjoyable because of this book! Rating: 5/5 stars
The Doors of Eden by Adrian Tchaikovsky was my next read in September, this is an epic sci-if novel about alternate worlds and life on other planets! I enjoyed this read, although I did find that it dragged in certain places. Rating: 3.5/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
My next audiobook listen was the first 6 volumes in the Tales of the City series by Armistead Maupin. Originally written as a weekly serial, this is a wonderful series following the inhabitants of a building of flats in San Francisco. I enjoyed certain volumes more than others, but in general they were a good listen! Rating: 3/5 - 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
The fourth and final book in this series came out in September, so I decided a re-read was in order so I can fully enjoy the finale. I love this series a lot, its funny and magical and the characters make me laugh a lot, so it was a pleasure to return to this world! Rating: 4/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
Competing for my favourite book of the month is A Kind of Spark by Elle McNicoll. A wonderful novel about Addie, who is autistic, and wants to build a memorial for the witch trials in her village. A novel brimming with heart, hope and love, I absolutely adored this novel! Rating: 5/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
The final book of September, and another favourite is The Poppy War by R.F Kuang. I have heard so much about this novel and the series as a whole, I knew I had to get to it soon. It is a very dark and violent fantasy novel inspired by Chinese history, and it will tear your heart apart as you read. But I do highly recommend it!! Rating: 5/5 stars Buy from Waterstones here
Phew! There we are, the 18 books I read in September. This month was definitely helped by audiobooks, but I’m really happy by the books I managed to get to, and how much I enjoyed them!
