April Wrap Up
Hello everyone! Today I am here to wrap up all the things I read in April. I read 18 books in April which is a crazy number, especially considering I struggled to find much motivation at various points in April. I will say that the Easter Readathon and the Netgalley Library Readathon helped, and graphic novels are always a good way to bump up my total! Here we go!
The Strangeworlds Travel Agency is one of my favourite kids books I have read in 2020, it reminds me of Enid Blyton’s Magic Faraway Tree series which is one of my faves ever. It’s a perfect adventure novel!
My second 5 star read of April was Goldilocks by Laura Lam, a feminist space opera about a team of astronauts who are on their way to create a new human habitat across space. Its a tense and thrilling novel which I couldn’t put down!
The Little Snake by A.L Kennedy I read as part of the Netgalley Library Readathon, its a very short novel about the snake from The Little Prince which I enjoyed but I did feel it was perhaps too short to really get involved in the story.
It was a good month for 5 star reads, my third 5 star read of April was Dangerous Remedy by Kat Dunn. This is an amazing YA fantasy set during the French Revolution with awesome LGBTQ+ characters and relationships!!
I only listened to 1 audiobook in April, and it was Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. I enjoyed this book, but I don’t think listening to it actually helped the narrative. I didn’t enjoy it anywhere near as much as I wanted to!
I seem to have read a lot of fantasy in April, particularly YA fantasy, and Nocturna by Maya Motayne joins this group. A YA fantasy with an interesting magic system I flew through this novel.
Then we begin a bit of a theme during the middle of April. I began Fence, a graphic novel series about fencing in a boys boarding school. It is really easy to read, and very easy to get absorbed into the storylines. I read Volume 1 first, which is editions 1-4. Then I read editions 5 and 6 separately. And I really enjoyed them all!
I also picked up one of my most anticipated reads of 2020, The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin. This is a fascinating sci-fi novel where cities have human avatars who have to fight to save their city from a threat from another dimension!
One of my anticipated releases of last year was The Fountains of Silence by Ruta Sepetys, and I was excited to pick it up in April. Sadly I was a little disappointed by this novel, it didn’t hit anywhere near as hard as her other novels have!
So the Fence graphic novel session continues, I read editions 7 and 8 later in the month, and I am still really enjoying it!
Then I read and reviewed The Island Girls by Noelle Harrison for the blog tour at the end of April. You can check out my blog tour post here.
I finished the month with 4 very different novels! I read Strange Hotel by Eimear McBride, which is a very odd novel about a woman visiting different hotel rooms. I was disappointed by this novel, it didn’t have much plot and I was invested at all.
Next up I read Incendiary by Zoraida Cordova, a wonderful magical novel full of adventure and heartbreak and I loved it.
I read a manga next, one which was gifted to me from a wonderful friend for my birthday. Saikano by Shin Takahashi is about the relationship between two school kids, one of whom is being turned into a machine to fight for the army. I had no idea what I was getting into, but I am now fully invested in these two kids’ relationship.
My last read of April was The Bastard Legion by Gavin Smith, an action packed, fast-paced space opera novel about a soldier who takes over a prison ship and uses the prisoners as her own team of mercenaries. I really enjoyed this novel, it was a very fun read, and I am looking forward to picking up the next book.
